Yagami Light is an ace student with great prospects, who's bored out of his mind. Death note can go under the genre horror, thriller, and mystery. Basically a guy with a very high state of consciousness and morality recognizes the shit that is going around this world and his powerlessness to stop it. but one day a shinigami drops his death note, (not by accident of course, just wanted to mess around and have some fun.) However Yamagi Light takes this as a sign of revelation and tries in a desperate attempt to create his ideal utopia, without criminals or any bad people. This anime gets really controversial, "is this guy doing the right thing by killing off criminals?" A fight begins between the holder of the Death Note and the mysterious anonymous detective trying to uncover light's identity and bring him to justice.
