I'll start off by saying this - This anime is not for everyone. Not necessarily because of the fairly dark storyline, although that in itself is a put off for a lot of people, I'm sure, but mostly because it is not an action anime. This is more of a psychological anime, and it is brilliantly written and executed in order to make you question your own morality, but there are no over the top fight scenes, or even any fight scenes at all really. The story is executed almost purely verbally, which leads to my next point.
The dialogue, which is actually humorous quite often thanks to Ryuk (whom you are introduced to in the first episode, so I don't consider his name a spoiler), is very well played out even when not making you chuckle. The masterful dialogue is what makes this anime truly great. The battle of wits between the various characters truly leaves you wondering which party is right in their beliefs.
The animation is definitely not a detractor here either. This is easily one of the best drawn animes I have ever seen. The visual stimulus provided by the excellent animation quality certainly helps draw you in to the world of Death Note.
All of these factors work together to create an anime that is gripping and leaves you wondering what will happen next right up until the very end of the last episode. And I certainly don't intend to ruin the surprise. If you aren't turned away by the darker story and the lack of action, this anime is definitely one that will not disappoint you. I definitely recommend adding it to your repertoire.
