Summary:
In a future where the world has been ravaged by a nuclear apocalyse, there exists salvation in a domed city named "Romdo", where humans and their android servants, the AutoReiv, live in. Under the implementation of complete management control, it is a paradise where feelings are literally discarded, and the governing council dictates the way of life the citizens should live. But this utopian landscape is soon broken by a series of mystifying murders. Re-l Mayer, a female inspector from the Citizen Information Bureau, along with her autoreiv partner Iggy, are tasked to solve the murder cases. She is soon attacked by a creature drawn to her which is neither human nor android, and learns about the mysterious phenomena called "Awakening", an event which draws her further into the case...and to the world beyond the limits of Romdo.
From the first few episodes one could expect a "Ghost in the shell"-clone, but the series quickly deviates from its initial setting and developes a truly unique world and storytelling, which captured me deeply and thouroghly.
The philosophical aspects and religious allegories are presented very well and are explained, praised, questioned and refused all in the same series in a very tolerant manner. Some usual tropes, which the japanese use when it comes to certain religious beliefs are even reversed and shown from the other side of the coin, which i liked very much and what sets this series apart.
Ergo Proxy has further a great atmosphere (vastly enhanced by the use of colors, the music and the overall art style) and two of the greatest and most likeable characters of all time (in my opinion).
