Story--

There are many anime about magic. Quite simply, it is not the most original base for an anime. But Fairy Tail takes the concept a bit further by incorporating interesting magic forms and ways to use them. I've seen many magic-themed anime and must say that Fairy Tail succeeds in making magic seem a bit refreshing.
But, of course, Fairy Tail is shounen anime, and shounen anime characteristically follow certain patterns. There are a group of people who have strong beliefs. They value friendship, their bonds and never give up. They fight, get knocked down, get back up again and get stronger. In this aspect, Fairy Tail is quite unoriginal.
Fairy Tail's plot lines are far from boring however. Because of the fresh take on magic, even cliche plot lines are sometimes nice to watch, especially if you don't mind cliche.
Fairy Tail's battles are much shorter than other shounen anime such as Bleach. They're fast and to the point. Some will enjoy this and some will not. It is my opinion however, that the pacing could sometimes be a bit slower to maximize the effect of certain scenes. At times serious moments do not feel as serious because of how short they are and how overshadowed they are by comedic ones.

Dialogue--

Many anime lack memorable dialogue. Often times characters ramble on about nothing of particular importance just to fill the time. Fairy Tail is not one of these however. The dialogue is almost always meaningful and a few parts are quite memorable. Silly comments are usually for comedic value and are therefore not useless.

Animation--

Fairy Tail is all about the epic battles and heroic statements. But these things must be highlighted by good animation. Such is not often the case with Fairy Tail.
There are reports of it being the limited budget, but this is not about why something is how it is, it is about what something is. The animation in Fairy Tail is not very impressive. Often times frames are reused or still frames are incorporated into the anime. This takes away from the show.
Admittedly, though, the animation has picked up in later episodes, though it could still be much better. If Fairy Tail's battles are to be compared with the likes of those of Bleach, Naruto and One Piece, then its animation level must surely increase.

Entertainment--

Many say that Fairy Tail's comedy closely resembles that of One Piece. I can agree to this, but I feel the comedy on One Piece comes over better. Nevertheless, for lovers of light and jokingly insulting comedy, there is much entertainment to be had with this anime.
The fights are what is to be expected of a shounen anime: they are intense and sometimes epic.

This anime isn't for everyone. If you're looking for shounen that is somewhat different, then this might not be for you. If you're looking for a typical shounen anime that is quite well done with a slightly different take on a cliche theme, then there's a good chance you will take to this anime. Though Fairy Tail has a good few problems, it succeeds in standing above many similar shows.
