It's so unfortunate that the time between episode releases is SO LONG. The first episode of this came out in spring of 2007, despite what the info page here says, and there is about a 6 month gap between episode releases.

However, the anime is good enough to wait for. The story of Ultimate, unlike the original Hellsing TV series, stays true to the manga, and is better for it. If you haven't read the manga, you should. It's one of the best written stories I've ever come across. I discovered it back when the manga was in it's infancy, and found myself waiting for each new release with great anticipation, all the way to the final chapter, and the anime is the same way because it mirrors the story of the manga.

The dialogue in this series is all over the place, but always excellent. Some of the most absurd nonsense ever written is in during some of the dream sequences, and there is plenty of humor all over, as the series never really takes itself too seriously. That doesn't mean they don't know how to be serious though, as our main anti-hero, Alucard, is one of the most badass people ever. Some of his lines during fight scenes are bone-chillingly awesome, and they definitely show his character as a vampire.

The animation in this is worlds beyond what the original anime was capable of. It is quite a bit darker than the original series, and the animation shows it. Everything looks like the lights weren't turned up enough, but the richness of the mostly red color palette is all still there. The fight scenes are absolutely mind blowing as well, after seeing a "true" nosferatu battle you will never think of vampires the same way.

I'll sum it all up with this - if Alucard ever came across Edward Cullen, he would eat him. Literally eat him. And would not sparkle once while doing it.

If you can imagine Yuri on Ice! meets Holmes of Kyoto, then this is it. Slow paced but gripping. Boy-Love but not distasteful...
