Summary:
Tsuna is a hapless youth with low test scores and lower self esteem. His mother hires a tutor to help Tsuna out, but it comes as a surprise to the both of them when the tutor is a baby named Reborn, claiming to be from the Mafia. Reborn informs Tsuna that he's the next heir to the Vongola family mafia family and tries to help Tsuna reach the goal. Reborn possesses the Dying Will bullet, which kills a person and brings them back to life to fulfill the last regret they had, and even works to get Tsuna some henchmen to make him a true mafia boss-in-training.
To sum it up: If you seek something new and mind dazzling or something that gets you to think about your life maybe even the world itself, then watch something else, you'll get disappointed. However if you want to enjoy yourself, laugh a bit and see some good action, in addition you are fed up with katana here and katana there than this is your chance! (Please read on ....^^)
At first the animation style was rather shocking. Sloppy and kind of old; however that increased sufficiently for a good. Especially the later battles do look nice and smooth. Even so, you should be prepared for a rather rough outline instead of a nice and shining one.
That continues with the characters. They are decidedly neither deep nor complex. They do have their values and come in some kind of variety. However they are rather cliche and especially the protagonist is lame on top. This suits the story just fine. It is no great mind dazzling riddle game. Usually you can look through it from the start. That said I have to admit that there are usually secrets or hints that keep you hooked. So it is sufficient to get the anime going. I could have wished for more though especially as this is one of the very few anime that start out to deal with "Mafia" as a topic.
The bright side of all this is the humor. The characters are flat, the story nothing mind cracking so it is made up by being funny, which usually means hilariously stupid. However if you seek some deep and refreshing sarcasm or irony you are wrong to watch this anime.
In hindsight I ask myself why did I watch this if all was so shallow and not extremely good. The answer lies in the various types of combat. It is refreshing to have only ONE main character to use a sword(ok, there appear more and more, but i hope they can refrain themselves....), all the others have quite a variety of battle modes and to see all those new toys that the creators think up is definitely entertaining.
