"Madoka Magica" is a surprisingly good anime. Until I read some reviews of this series I thought I'd never watch a magical girls show but apart from the use of the word it was hard to tell that this was one. The whole setting reminded me more of something like shakugan no shana.
The plot was one of the best things about this anime. It was heavy, unpredictable, had some great twists and although I couldn't imagine how it could possibly end, I'm satisfied with the ending they gave me.
Another thing I liked was how the atmosphere became more dark as more of the secrets were revealed. This reminded me a bit of the first full metal alchemist.
Dialogue is the only thing I could subtract some points off. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't really bad but it wasn't as perfect as the rest. I never thought that it was impressive and there were times were I didn't follow.
The animations fits the series pretty well. It's refreshing to see some art that doesn't focus on and exaggerate the female body. As it's a magical girl show, I expected a lot of transformations but there were close to none (except in the intro).
The contrast between reality and the witches' domain was excellent as well. It's a bit experimental and needs some getting used to but the madness just drips right off of it.
I kept wanting to watch another episode, not just after watching one. I really looked forward to continuing even when I couldn't and had to stop more than once because it was getting to late. I also loved how they tied beginning to end in the last episodes. I will definitely try to convince people to watch this anime.
