14 year-old Madoka Kaname has a dream in which a dark haired girl is struggling against an evil force. As Madoka wakes up and goes to school that morning, the very same girl, Homura Akemi, enrolls in her class. Even stranger, Homura seems to know Madoka and later confronts her in the hallway about whether she cares for her friends or not, saying she should stay how she is or else she risks losing everything. |

I'll make this review short and sweet for those with small attention spans. Like everyone has said, do NOT judge this anime by its cover! Its actually very deep and the concepts in the show aren't really girly at all.
This anime is of a category in which I have never watched before. This anime is literally an "ANYBODY can die" anime. Even the main characters(s) lives are up for grabs. That made each battle MUCH more intense, instead of the usual "They won't/can't die, they're the main characters!"
This anime would have easily made my top 5, if it wasn't for ep 9 and beyond. Without going into spoiler detail, I'll say that past ep 10, they do flashbacks to explain the whole story. This is where it went downhill. As you may see in different animes, it got to the point where the whole balance of the universe is on one person's shoulders. And that's just me simplifying the concept. Its MUCH more confusing and hard to follow.
To sum it up, it turns out that this whole story is just an infinite loop until the very end..

If you can imagine Yuri on Ice! meets Holmes of Kyoto, then this is it. Slow paced but gripping. Boy-Love but not distasteful...
