Neon Gensis was an anime that took the Giant Robot genre and put a realistic approach on it. "What would this really be like in real life"
Thats how I feel about Madoka Magica. It takes Magical Girls and puts a dark and real life approach on the genre. In the world of Madoka Magica, Magical Girls become Magical Girls by having a wish granted by a small creature. They then must fight very dangerous creatures called Witches that can be found pretty much anywhere. In the anime the other Magical Girls constantly talk about how they are killed by witches all the time.
And yes, you see it happen first hand by watching the anime. The story is about how two of the main characters become Magical Girls, the challenge they face just to decide to make their wish, and the challenges they face for having done so afterwards. It is a very interesting and unique story.
The animation is insanely good. You can't tell just by looking at pictures, but as you watch, you'll see a lot of detail is put into even standard scenes in the anime. The combat scenes, and the realm where witches live in use extremely detailed and expensive animation artwork. It is very impressive and looks great.
What I love most of all about this anime, is it is not meant for just girls. It has a lot of dark tones and scenery for your average guy to enjoy, and MOST of the Magical Girls outfits and weaponry are not what you come to expect from Magical Girl outfits (bright colors, flowers, ribbons, fluffiness). ONly the main character seems to have a girly outfit from what I've seen so far.
Anyways, this anime is an awesome twist to its genre, and should totally be given a try.
