Summary: As a child, Shion Ishiwatari's parents were murdered in their own home. Shion escaped unharmed, yet the trauma caused her to lose her voice. The only evidence police found was a shougi board and one piece "the King". Neighbours and close friends of the family, Shinji and Sachiko Yasuoka, adopted Shion and taught Shion how to play shougi. As the years passed, she became known as a genius and quite a famous player. Now, as her fame rises, her past resurfaces and she discovers that being a professional shogi player may just lead to finding her parents' killer.

The mixture of a mystery and a sport is quite rare, and it works so well in this anime. All characters are very interesting. Shion is such an adorable girl that you can't help but root for her. The matches are always very exciting. Even though i know nothing about shogi, i couldn't take my eyes of the screen at all and had to read every single subtitle line during the matches. It was very intense and entertaining.

I kind of figured out the culprit halfway through the series but the explanation was only revealed at the very end. Even though i'm satisfied with the process of solving the mystery, the explanation, ie. the motive of the culprit just feels very half-hearted to me. It was a bit too random and shallow, probably because the author wanted to leave it suspended till very end, that's why we ended up not having enough time to learn more about the motive.

Overall it's been a very entertaining watch. This is one of the very few anime series which i didn't skip even a single second while watching (i'm a mecha fan, yet i tend to skip battle scenes quite often :P).
