Summary:
It's been a thousand years since the Gauna, a strange alien race with no known method of communication, destroyed the solar system. A portion of humanity managed to escape using enormous "seed ships" like the Sidonia, which have allowed them to maintain the population while drifting through space. Nagate Tanikaze is a young man who has been raised deep in the bowels of the ship. When he goes into training to pilot the huge robotic weapons known as Gardes, Nagate is entrusted with piloting the legendary unit known as Tsugumori. Nagate and his fellow pilots put their lives on the line against the Gauna, in the ultimate battle for the survival of humanity.
In summary: Very excited about this show, completely cg animated, a thrilling space-mecha science fiction anime
I'm so glad that my favourite cyberpunk artist, the creator of this show finally got his work animated. I'm an avid reader of his earlier works, and including of course, the manga from which this show is adapted.
Produced by the company that made the Tron animated series, this is a fully CG animated anime. An interesting move on their part, and quite risky to be honest, but I got used to it. Fair warning though, it has a choppy frame rate, so you may not like that.
This story is about a boy who is suddenly become a mech pilot, but the world surrounding it is vast, and you won't understand everything in the first go. It has a grounded take on living in space, and the threat is very real to all the characters.
I hate to bring it up, but it must be said: Think of this as a sort of mirror image of the Attack on Titan (or should i say.. Shingeki no Kyojin?). Except it's set in the future, and the 'big bad alien threat' is called Guana, and of course, it's set in the future, but especially coming from reading the manga there's a lot more going on for this show.
For fans who know his work, it's especially more enjoyable because the creator left some easter eggs referencing his past works (the bear nurse, gravitational weapons and the guana). So this is a very satisfying thing to see.
I am very excited about this show and will admit that I'm biased in that respect, but I urge you to give it a chance. Unfortunately it takes some time for it to build up, but i'll stick through it to see how it ends up. 7.5-8/10 from me.
