Sword Art Online is a new anime this season. While it does seem to have a manga, I will be critiquing on the anime. So far, only one episode has been released. However, I can vouch that the anime is one of a kind. Sword Art Online is about a new virtual game world in the year 2022. It uses 'NerveGear' - a helmet-like object which scans the users head. Using this, they are able to enter the game and it is like a virtual reality. THe main protagonist is Kirito, who lives with his mother and sister. He is one of the lucky 1000 people who were beta testers, i.e. they had tried the game before it was released. Suddenly players realise the logout button is gone. They find out from a holographic image of the "game master" or the inventor that it was planned from the start. He tells them that it is impossible to escape from the game unless they finish climbing their way up 100 levels, defeating bosses along the way. The NerveGear cannot be removed otherwise microwaves will fry their brains and in the game, once their HP is lost, they cannot be regained. Death is highly likely.
From the first episode, rather than saying "Oh, it's so well thought out!", I will say that the anime has great potential. The story thusfar is original, creative and interesting. The graphics too, are crisp and fresh. So far, no ecchi - a bonus. I noticed that recently, most new animes are filled with ecchi and harems but Sword Art seems to focus on the plotline, the crativity and this is why it has become MY number ONE anime this season. To anyone who is looking for a more than decent anime to watch, I recommend everyone give this a try especially if you enjoy gaming! :)
