Summary: |
Okajima Rokuro is a Japanese businessman…in a town full of Japanese businessmen. His normal day consists of social drinking with clients and being kicked around by his bosses. He finally gets a break though, as he’s sent by his company to the tropical seas of Eastern China to deliver a disc…only his boat gets hijacked by a band of mercenaries that were hired to steal it. “Rock” (as he is newly dubbed by his captors) catches the interest of the only female merc “Revy” as she thinks he’s worth a ransom, taking him hostage. However, the disc turns out to be more trouble than its worth, and complicates things both for Rock, and the mercenaries known as Black Lagoon. |

This is an anime about the underground from an innocent businessman's POV by our protagonist, Rock. From his kidnapping, he is absorbed into a world of darkness, of terror, of violence, of prostitution, of drugs, and anything related to the underground. This is a mature anime because there are realistic depictions of the events listed above. There is some nudity and suggestive scenes. There is blood and guns.
The storyline is gripping because it features Rock's psychological struggle trying to find out what is right and what is wrong. He was lucky enough to be spared his life but is this the new life he wants? After he is abandoned by his company, he decides to live his new life in the fictional city of Roanapur. The animation is great for the most part like when you are watching a fight scene when Revy demonstrates her skills with the gun or a crazy car chase scene. There is some humor but it's not a comedy.
I find it highly entertaining because we are introduced to very interesting characters, both the antagonists and protagonists. We have people of different backgrounds both racially and socially so it adds to a lot of diversity. Many people may find that this anime emits an anti-American feel but it is only because it takes place in a fictional South Asian city where poverty is at extreme. There is some accurate history involved to provide a background but I would suggest you don't take offense to it because we have to take in mind that the people of Roanapur have been oppressed by outside influences for too long. Otherwise, enjoy watching gang wars and shootouts between mafias and triads.
